Who Was Saint Andrew?
Saint Andrew was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ and the brother of Saint Peter. According to Christian tradition, he was martyred by being crucified on an X-shaped cross, which later became known as the Saint Andrew’s Cross. This symbol now appears on the flag of Scotland, known as the Saltire.
Saint Andrew is not only the patron saint of Scotland but also of several other countries including Greece, Russia, and Ukraine. He is also the patron saint of fishermen, singers, and women wishing to become mothers.
History of Saint Andrew’s Day
The celebration of Saint Andrew’s Day on November 30th is believed to date back to the reign of Malcolm III (1058–1093). It was originally a religious feast day celebrating Saint Andrew’s contributions to Christianity.
The tradition of celebrating Scotland’s patron saint gained significant popularity during the 18th century as Scottish nationalism grew. In 2006, the Scottish Parliament declared Saint Andrew’s Day an official bank holiday, although banks are not required to close and employers are not obligated to give employees the day off.
“For Scotland’s patron saint, for Scotland’s flag, for Scotland’s people—Saint Andrew’s Day represents everything that makes Scotland great.”
